Free Fishing Days set for June 7 and Oct. 18 in New Jersey

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced the dates for the 2025 Free Fishing Days: Saturday, June 7, and Saturday, Oct. 18.

On these two days, residents and visitors may fish New Jersey’s public waters without a license or trout stamp, though all other regulations — including size and daily catch limits — remain in effect.

The June date coincides with National Fishing and Boating Week, while the October date allows anglers to take advantage of the state’s fall trout stocking program.

New Jersey’s Free Fishing Days are an ideal opportunity for families and first-timers to experience freshwater fishing without making an upfront investment. While anglers under 16 already fish license-free year-round, these days allow adults to join in without purchasing a license — a gateway to what could become a lifelong hobby.

Freshwater fishing in New Jersey has never been better,” Fish and Wildlife officials said. “With more species and more fishing locations than ever, anglers can enjoy diverse opportunities across the Garden State.”

Thanks to ongoing efforts at the Hackettstown and Pequest state fish hatcheries, anglers may find stocked muskellunge, northern pike, walleye, striped bass hybrids, channel catfish, lake trout, and rainbow trout in New Jersey’s lakes, rivers and streams. Wild fish populations are also thriving, though they may be subject to more stringent conservation rules.

For families with children, the 9th Annual Youth Fishing Challenge will take place on June 7 at various locations. Additional Free Fishing Days events — including youth derbies organized by municipalities, civic clubs and outdoor groups — are also expected that weekend.

Beginners interested in learning more about fishing can take advantage of free programs and classes offered by Fish and Wildlife at the Pequest Trout Hatchery in Oxford Township, Warren County. The hatchery also features exhibits, a butterfly garden, picnic areas, hiking trails, and a handicapped-accessible fishing site along the Pequest River.

To help anglers find the best spots, Fish and Wildlife publishes Places to Fish, a guide listing public waters stocked with desirable species. The booklet is available online and at select offices.
