Gottheimer honors Sussex County senior of the year at New Jersey State Fair

AUGUSTA, N.J. (Sussex County) — U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) joined Senior Day celebrations at the New Jersey State Fair, presenting a U.S. flag flown over the Capitol to Sussex County’s “Senior of the Year,” Shirley Smith Hill of Augusta.

Hill, a longtime community volunteer, was recognized for decades of service, including donating to food pantries, serving meals at Manna House for the Needy, and spearheading holiday toy drives for children. Last year, she and fellow church members packed 1,056 Operation Christmas Child Boxes filled with gifts for children in need.

“The New Jersey State Fair is one of my favorite New Jersey traditions,” Gottheimer said. “I’m proud to honor Shirley Smith Hill, who has spent decades giving back to our community. Her commitment to helping others is truly inspiring.”

While at the fair, Gottheimer met with families, veterans, and youth leaders, toured 4-H livestock exhibits, visited local veteran organizations, and explored the U.S. Army’s flight and parachute virtual reality exhibit.

Hill’s recognition highlights her longstanding dedication to Sussex County residents, ensuring no child goes without a gift and families in need have access to food and support.
