Gov. Murphy, NJDOH urge residents to stay up to date on vaccines during Immunization Awareness Month

NEW JERSEY — As families prepare for the upcoming school year and cooler months, Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) are reminding residents of the importance of staying current on recommended vaccines, including those for COVID-19, flu, and RSV, during National Immunization Awareness Month.

Murphy proclaimed August 2025 as Immunization Awareness Month in New Jersey, noting that vaccination “is proven to be one of the most successful public health interventions by preventing countless cases of disease and disability and saving millions of lives.”

“Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to prevent serious illness and keep our schools, workplaces, and communities healthy,” Acting Health Commissioner Jeff Brown said. “Staying up to date on immunizations helps protect children heading back to school and older adults from health complications related to vaccine-preventable diseases.”

NJDOH is urging residents to review their vaccination status with a health care provider, highlighting that vaccines protect against 18 serious diseases and help prevent the spread of illnesses in schools and communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New Jersey’s vaccination coverage for children under age 3 lags behind the national average — 62.5% compared to 72.2%.

The department also noted CDC recommendations for COVID-19 and RSV vaccines for eligible populations, annual flu shots for everyone six months and older, and Tdap and flu vaccinations for pregnant women to protect both mother and child.

Vaccines are widely available through health care providers, pharmacies, clinics, and local health departments. Financial assistance is available through programs such as Vaccines for Children and the federally funded 317 Program for eligible adults.

NJDOH also announced winners of its 2025 Hot Shots for Tots Immunization Campaign, which recognizes child care and preschool facilities for promoting immunization awareness and prevention. Gold awardees include NORWESCAP Newton Head Start, NORWESCAP Wantage Head Start and Early Head Start, and Cambridge Park Preschool, among others. Silver and Bronze award winners, as well as honorable mentions, were also recognized.
