Green Pond Volunteer Fire Company urges caution as ice forms on lake: ‘there is no safe ice’

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – As temperatures drop and the Green Pond Lake begins to freeze, the Green Pond Volunteer Fire Company is warning residents and visitors that “there is no safe ice.”

While many are excited about the frozen lake, the Fire Company emphasizes that the ice thickness is highly variable, and not the entire lake has frozen over.

The ice may appear solid in some areas, but with warming temperatures expected this week, the ice will weaken and become more dangerous. The Fire Company advises people to stay close to the shore where the water is shallower and avoid venturing out onto the middle of the lake.

In the event someone falls through the ice, immediately call 911 to activate a rescue response. Time is critical, and while waiting for rescuers to arrive, it’s important to stay calm, keep your eyes on the person, and note the exact location where they fell through. Do not attempt to rescue the individual yourself, as this could result in becoming a second victim.

If possible, throw a rope, ice picks, or a flotation device to help the person stay afloat until help arrives. Once the victim is out of the water, hypothermia becomes a serious concern.

Quick action can save lives, and the Green Pond Volunteer Fire Company urges everyone to exercise caution as the ice on the lake continues to form and change.
