NEW JERSEY – Families moving to New Jersey have many safe and welcoming communities to consider, according to a new Best US Moving report highlighting the top 10 family-friendly towns in the state.
The list includes Glen Gardner and Hackettstown, along with eight other towns known for strong schools, safe neighborhoods and active community life.
1. Glen Gardner — With fewer than 2,000 residents, Glen Gardner offers quiet streets, a low crime rate and seasonal community events such as summer picnics and holiday markets. Families enjoy nearby Spruce Run Recreation Area for hiking, fishing and picnicking, while local schools provide personal attention and community values.
2. Clinton — Clinton is known for scenic charm and highly rated schools such as Clinton Public School. Its walkable downtown includes shops, bakeries and dining, while the Red Mill Museum and riverside parks give families a mix of history and outdoor fun. Convenient access to I-78 makes commuting simple.
3. Phillipsburg — Phillipsburg stands out for affordability, with single-family homes often priced between $250,000 and $300,000. Schools and parks are improving, and community events like the Railroad Festival and fall fairs bring neighbors together. Its close location to Easton, Pa., also adds convenience for work and recreation.
4. Flemington — Flemington blends historic charm with family-oriented living. The Flemington-Raritan schools and Hunterdon Central High School are highly regarded, while downtown farmers markets, kid-friendly fairs and local farms provide weekend activities. Housing options range from historic homes to modern townhouses.
5. Hackettstown — Hackettstown offers a balanced small-town lifestyle, with well-regarded schools, youth programs and affordable homes typically priced between $325,000 and $475,000. Families frequent Alumni Park, Riverfront Park and the town library, while Centenary University contributes educational and cultural opportunities.
6. Somerville — Somerville has a lively downtown filled with shops, restaurants and public parks. Families benefit from well-rated schools such as Van Derveer Elementary and enjoy local events like art walks and outdoor movie nights. Direct train access to New York City supports work-life balance.
7. Bridgewater — Bridgewater’s strong Bridgewater-Raritan schools, Duke Island Park and community sports leagues make it popular with families. Shopping centers such as Bridgewater Commons and easy access to major highways add to its appeal for commuting parents.
8. Morristown — Morristown combines culture, history and family amenities. The Morris Museum offers programs for kids, while Burnham Park and Lidgerwood Park provide outdoor recreation. The town’s direct train line to New York City adds commuting convenience.
9. Hillsborough — Hillsborough continues to grow while focusing on education and recreation. Schools such as Hillsborough High provide AP courses and extracurricular programs. Families also enjoy Duke Farms nature reserve, parks, food festivals and parades.
10. Westfield — Westfield is noted for its top-rated public schools, walkable downtown and seasonal events such as music festivals and holiday parades. Tamaques Park and YMCA youth programs provide recreation, while locally owned shops and cafes give the town a family-friendly atmosphere.
“Whether you want walkable streets, weekend farmers markets, or strong youth programs, there’s something here for every family,” the report said.
Best US Moving said the 10 towns represent a balance between suburban comfort and urban access, allowing families to live in safe neighborhoods while remaining within reach of New York City and Philadelphia.
