Hunterdon County appoints commissioner to lead America 250 celebration efforts
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — Hunterdon County officials have appointed Commissioner Shaun C. Van Doren to help lead local planning efforts for the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.
The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners named Van Doren as special liaison to the county’s America 250th Celebration Committee, which is coordinating events marking the Semiquincentennial in 2026.
The anniversary will commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with local officials planning a series of programs highlighting Hunterdon County’s Revolutionary War history.
At an April 7 meeting, Commissioner Jeff Kuhl cited Van Doren’s background in historical preservation and public education as key factors in his selection.
“Director Lanza and I believe that, with the significant investment the County is making in this year’s festivities, there is no better person to serve in this role than Commissioner Van Doren,” said Commissioner Kuhl. “His strong support for historical education and longstanding commitment to preserving and promoting our county’s history make him well suited for this responsibility.”
Van Doren has previously served as president of the Tewksbury Historical Society and currently serves as Tewksbury Township historian. Officials said he has been active in community engagement through lectures and public programming.
“It is an honor to serve in this role as we prepare to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding,” said Commissioner Van Doren. “Hunterdon County has a deep and meaningful connection to Revolutionary War history, and I look forward to working with our partners to bring these stories to life for residents and visitors.”
Planned events include a Semiquincentennial Parade on June 14, 2026, in Flemington, public readings of the Declaration of Independence on July 8 with a fireworks display and concert at Deer Path Park, and a reenactment of the Skirmish of Geary’s Ridge on Oct. 10 at the South County Fairgrounds in East Amwell Township.
Additional programming is expected to include lectures, exhibits and educational initiatives throughout the year.
County officials said the effort aims to provide opportunities for residents, students and visitors to engage with local history during the national milestone.
