Hunterdon County awards $1 million in grants to enhance local parks and recreation
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners has approved $1 million in Municipal Parks and Recreation Grants to support park improvements and recreation projects across 20 municipalities, officials announced following the board’s Oct. 21 meeting.
The funding, recommended by outside consultant T&M Associates, is part of the county’s annual commitment to preserving open space, improving recreation opportunities, and strengthening local partnerships.
“Continuing to protect our open space and farmland, while promoting active outdoor recreation at both the county and municipal levels, remains a cornerstone of our efforts to ‘Keep Hunterdon, Hunterdon,’” said Commissioner Director John E. Lanza.
The 2025 awards follow last year’s $1.242 million in grants, bringing the Commissioner Board’s total investment to more than $2.2 million in direct support for parks and recreation projects since the program began.
The Municipal Parks and Recreation Grant Program complements other municipal grant initiatives launched by the Board, including last year’s $1 million Municipal Infrastructure Grant Program and $500,000 in local law enforcement support grants approved last month.
“The Parks and Recreation Grant Program is another example of the ‘New Era of Partnership’ with our municipalities that was announced last year by then-Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl,” Lanza added.
He continued, “Preservation plays a crucial role in safeguarding our environment and local heritage. This program reflects the Board’s continued dedication to ensuring our municipalities have the resources they need to develop and enhance public recreational spaces.”
Since 2022, the Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners has awarded more than $3.7 million in direct municipal grant funding through programs supporting parks and recreation, infrastructure improvements, and public safety — underscoring its commitment to strong partnerships with local communities.
