Hunterdon County collects 392 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs during National Take Back Day on April 26
HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ — Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson and Hunterdon County Sheriff Frederick W. Brown have announced the results of a joint initiative known as National Take Back Day.
Sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Take Back Day is a national event designed to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible method for disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for medication misuse.
Hunterdon County’s Take Back Day is a collaborative effort involving the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office, local police departments, and the Safe Communities Coalition.
The April 26 Take Back Day event resulted in the collection of 392 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs from across the county. Residents were able to safely dispose of unused and expired medications at designated collection sites located in police departments and public buildings.
In total, 655 pounds of prescription drugs were collected in Hunterdon County between October 2024 and April 26, 2025.
According to the DEA, studies show that most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. Additionally, improper disposal methods—such as flushing medications down the toilet or discarding them in the trash—pose potential safety and environmental hazards.
