Hunterdon County Commissioners announce $850K state grant for senior and disabled transportation services

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – The Hunterdon County Commissioner Board recently announced the approval of a resolution for the 2025 Senior Citizen and Disabled Resident Transportation Assistance Program (SCDRTAP) agreement.

The contract provides $858,779.73 in funding to support transportation services for senior citizens and disabled residents in Hunterdon County.

Deputy Director Shaun C. Van Doren, who also serves as the liaison to the Department of Human Services, stated, “The approval of the 2025 SCDRTAP grant agreement is a significant step in ensuring that our senior citizens and disabled residents have access to essential transportation services. These funds will enable us to continue providing reliable and accessible transportation options, which are crucial for maintaining independence and mobility throughout the community.”

In 1984, the Governor of New Jersey signed into law the “Senior Citizen and Disabled Resident Transportation Assistance Act,” allowing Casino Tax Revenues to be used for transportation services for elderly (60+) and disabled individuals. In 2024, the Hunterdon County Commissioner Board applied to the NJ Transit Corporation for State funding under the SCDRTAP program.

The SCDRTAP funding will support various transportation services, including curb-to-curb transportation, fixed-route services, and specialized transportation for medical appointments, shopping, and other essential activities. The goal is to provide convenient and affordable transportation options to meet the diverse needs of Hunterdon County’s senior and disabled residents.

“I want to thank my fellow Commissioners and the dedicated Department of Human Services staff who worked diligently to secure this funding. Their efforts ensure that our most vulnerable residents continue to receive the transportation services they depend on,” Van Doren said.

The NJ Transit Corporation secured a total of $858,779.73 in SCDRTAP funding, which includes a base award of $790,286.00 and a closeout balance of $68,493.73 from previous funding. The 2025 SCDRTAP agreement will cover the period from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
