Hunterdon County creates $500,000 grant program for fire, EMS agencies
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners has approved a new $500,000 grant program to provide financial assistance to local fire departments and emergency medical service agencies.
The Hunterdon County Fire and EMS Grant Program was approved as part of the county’s 2026 budget and is intended to help emergency service organizations address equipment and capital needs.
“Our firefighters and EMS personnel answer the call at all hours of the day and night, often as volunteers who balance their service with careers, family responsibilities, and other commitments,” said Commissioner Director Lanza. “This grant program recognizes the vital role they play in protecting our communities and provides meaningful support to help departments secure the equipment and resources needed to carry out their mission.”
County officials said many fire and EMS agencies face rising costs for essential equipment, including turnout gear, communications systems, medical supplies, rescue tools and apparatus-related equipment.
The grant program will provide funding for equipment purchases and capital improvements that support emergency operations and public safety services. Eligible projects may include turnout gear, communications equipment, rescue tools, medical equipment, facility improvements and other investments that improve emergency response capabilities.
Commissioner Shaun C. Van Doren, co-liaison to the Board’s Budget Committee, said the program reflects the county’s commitment to supporting essential services.
“Every day, our firefighters and EMS personnel stand ready to respond when residents need them most,” said Commissioner Van Doren. “Whether it’s a structure fire, motor vehicle accident, medical emergency, severe weather event, or technical rescue incident, these dedicated men and women rely on specialized equipment and training to perform their duties safely and effectively. This grant program represents an investment not only in our emergency services agencies, but in the safety and well-being of every Hunterdon County resident.”
Commissioner Director John E. Lanza also credited Van Doren and Commissioner Zach Rich for helping secure funding for the initiative during the budget process.
The grant application period opens June 5 and closes July 2. Hunterdon County municipalities, fire departments and EMS agencies will receive application materials and program guidelines directly from the county.
Grant awards will range from $10,000 to $35,000. Funding recommendations will be reviewed after the application period, with awards expected later this year.
The program is part of the Board of County Commissioners’ “Era of Partnership” initiative, which focuses on supporting municipalities and first responders across Hunterdon County.
