Hunterdon County honors Ed O’Brien for 40 years of service on Construction Board of Appeals
FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners formally honored longtime volunteer Ed O’Brien on Tuesday, June 16, for his 40 years of service to the Hunterdon County Construction Board of Appeals.
O’Brien, whose tenure began in the early 1980s, was recognized at the commissioners’ public meeting for his enduring contributions to county governance and community development. The board unanimously issued a proclamation of appreciation celebrating his decades of service.
“Ed O’Brien’s commitment to Hunterdon County is the kind of quiet leadership that builds lasting institutions,” said Commissioner Director John E. Lanza. “For four decades, he has shown what it means to serve not for recognition, but out of integrity and care for his community. His legacy will continue to shape our work long after his final vote.”
As a public member of the board, O’Brien brought a combination of architectural expertise, balanced judgment, and approachable leadership to the review of appeals. Known for his ability to navigate complex cases with fairness and good humor, he earned the trust of both his fellow board members and the residents he served.
The Hunterdon County Construction Board of Appeals serves as a review body for disputes related to building and construction decisions made by municipal code officials. The volunteer board, composed of architects, engineers, and tradespeople, ensures fair and consistent enforcement of New Jersey’s Uniform Construction Code.
Homeowners, contractors, or businesses who disagree with decisions such as denied permits, work stoppages, or code violations can appeal to the board for reconsideration.
The commissioners commended O’Brien not only for his professional expertise but for his decades-long dedication to public service. His work, they noted, has strengthened the county’s approach to development and maintained accountability in construction oversight.
The recognition concluded with heartfelt thanks from both the Board of Commissioners and the Construction Board of Appeals, acknowledging O’Brien’s remarkable contribution to the Hunterdon County community.
