Hunterdon County invites volunteers to final veterans headstone cleaning event of 2026

RINGOES, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County is inviting residents to honor local veterans ahead of Veterans Day by participating in the final Veterans Headstone Cleaning Program event of 2026 on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Union Cemetery in Ringoes.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the cemetery on Boss Road, providing volunteers with an opportunity to help preserve veterans’ gravesites while learning proper headstone cleaning and preservation techniques.

Hunterdon County Commissioner Susan Soloway, co-liaison to the county’s Division of Veterans Affairs, encouraged residents to participate in the community service initiative.

“The days leading up to Veterans Day are a fitting time to reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women who served our nation,” said Commissioner Soloway. “By helping care for veterans’ headstones, residents can play a direct role in ensuring their memory and service continue to be recognized for generations to come.”

Since its launch in 2022, Hunterdon County’s Veterans Headstone Cleaning Program has brought together volunteers of all ages to clean and preserve veterans’ grave markers at cemeteries throughout the county.

County officials said the initiative not only recognizes the service and sacrifices of local veterans but also helps preserve an important part of Hunterdon County’s history for future generations.

Hunterdon County Deputy Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl, who also serves as co-liaison to the Division of Veterans Affairs, emphasized the program’s lasting impact.

“These headstones are lasting reminders of the courage, service, and sacrifice of our veterans,” said Deputy Director Kuhl. “When volunteers come together to preserve them, they are doing more than maintaining a gravesite. They are helping ensure that future generations can learn from and appreciate the contributions of those who served our country.”

The Nov. 7 event will conclude the county’s headstone cleaning efforts for 2026, offering residents an opportunity to give back to the veteran community before Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and no previous experience is required. All cleaning supplies will be provided, along with instructions on proper headstone cleaning and preservation techniques.

Residents interested in participating are encouraged to RSVP in advance by emailing bbreese@co.hunterdon.nj.us.
