Hunterdon County police warn motorists after reports of possible police impersonator
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — Police departments in Raritan Township and Readington Township are warning motorists to remain alert after receiving reports of an individual allegedly impersonating a police officer and attempting to pull vehicles over using an unmarked car.
Raritan Township police said the department received reports Thursday of a person attempting to stop motorists while posing as a law enforcement officer. Authorities said the incidents are under active investigation and emphasized that impersonating a police officer is a serious crime that threatens public safety and undermines trust.
Police urged anyone who suspects they have encountered a police impersonator to act cautiously and contact law enforcement immediately.
Readington Township police said they are aware of similar incidents reported in neighboring communities and have received information indicating that a related incident may have occurred within Readington. Those reports are also under investigation.
Both departments advised motorists who are unsure whether a person attempting to stop them is a legitimate police officer to remain in their vehicle, slow down and activate hazard lights to acknowledge the stop. Drivers are urged to call 911 immediately, provide their location and explain their concerns so a dispatcher can verify whether the stop is legitimate and send a marked police unit if necessary.
If unable to call 911, police recommend driving to a well-lit, busy area such as a grocery store, convenience store or police station. Motorists are also encouraged to note identifying details such as the vehicle type, license plate or badge number, if possible, and to report suspicious encounters without delay.
Authorities said anyone who falsely presents themselves as a law enforcement officer will be arrested and prosecuted. The investigation remains ongoing, and police asked residents to remain calm but vigilant while driving.
