Hunterdon County proclaims May as Older Americans Month
HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed May 2026 as Older Americans Month, recognizing the contributions of older residents and promoting healthy aging throughout the community.
County officials said nearly 29% of Hunterdon County residents are age 60 or older, underscoring the importance of programs that support wellness, independence and social connection among older adults.
This year’s national Older Americans Month theme, “Champion Your Health,” was designated by the Administration for Community Living and encourages individuals to focus on health and well-being at every stage of life.
According to the county, older residents contributed more than 3,100 hours to physical activity classes during 2025 as both participants and instructors. Officials said 287 individuals participated in 36 different classes, generating more than 2,700 attendances.
The county also hosted health and wellness lectures aimed at promoting lifelong learning and healthy living for seniors.
During the commissioners meeting, Kevin Burghardt discussed ongoing county efforts to provide programs, resources and opportunities that help older residents remain active and engaged in the community.
Burghardt also recognized volunteers who assist at county senior centers, noting their contributions are essential to the success of the programs.
Deputy Director Jeff Kuhl praised the county’s older adult population during the proclamation presentation.
“Our older residents are an important part of what makes Hunterdon County such a strong and vibrant community. Their experience, knowledge, and continued involvement enrich the lives of others, and we are proud to recognize their contributions during Older Americans Month,” Kuhl said.
County commissioners encouraged residents to recognize older adults and those who support senior services throughout the month.
