Hunterdon Health and MidJersey Orthopaedics introduce robotic and augmented reality technology for joint replacement

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon Health and MidJersey Orthopaedics announced the addition of new enabling technologies for knee, hip, and shoulder replacement surgeries at Hunterdon Medical Center, advancing precision and patient outcomes in orthopedic care.

For knee replacements, Dr. Robert More and Dr. Daniel Torino now use robotic assistance during procedures. Dr. More operates with the Johnson & Johnson VELYS robot, while Dr. Torino uses the Stryker Mako robot. Both systems use each patient’s anatomy to produce highly precise bone cuts and ligament balancing, offering the potential for improved recovery and long-term outcomes. Robotic-assisted replacement is especially beneficial for patients who only require a unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement rather than a total replacement.

For hip replacements, Dr. Torino also utilizes the Stryker Mako robot for “navigation” purposes, allowing more accurate placement of the acetabular component in the pelvis — a factor critical to long-term hip stability.

For shoulder replacements, Dr. Michael Pollack uses the Medacta extAR shoulder system. The technology employs a CT scan for pre-operative 3D planning and combines it with intra-operative data and augmented reality. This process allows Dr. Pollack to precisely position the glenoid component, enhancing range of motion and durability.

“Dr. More, an orthopedic surgeon, uses the VELYS robot during surgery at Hunterdon Medical Center,” the announcement said.

In the past year, Hunterdon Health and MidJersey Orthopaedics have also worked together to improve patient care protocols. The partnership established an outpatient total joint replacement program, allowing same-day discharges for eligible patients. The program emphasizes evidence-based, multimodal pain control using spinal anesthetics and targeted hip and knee nerve blocks.

Additionally, both organizations are developing new pain management strategies aimed at achieving opioid-free recovery for all joint replacement patients.
