I-80 westbound ramp to Howard Boulevard to remain closed through Nov. 21, NJDOT says

MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — The closure of the I-80 westbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard has been extended by one week as work continues on the Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The ramp, which first closed on Oct. 31 and was scheduled to reopen Nov. 14, will now remain closed until 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, unless construction is completed earlier. NJDOT said the extended closure is necessary to allow crews to reconstruct the ramp and improve drainage.

During the closure, the following detour remains in effect: Motorists traveling on I-80 westbound who intend to exit at Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington must continue west to Exit 27A, follow the ramp to Route 206 south, pass under I-80, then stay right to enter I-80 eastbound and take Exit 30 back to Howard Boulevard.

The work is part of a $65.4 million federally funded project to replace the deteriorating I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard/County Route 516. The improvements include raising bridge clearances, widening shoulders, extending acceleration and deceleration lanes, and widening ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will also be reconfigured to improve traffic flow.

Additional upgrades include new traffic signals and lighting, ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks, and sidewalk extensions connecting to the Mount Arlington Train Station to enhance pedestrian and bicycle access. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

NJDOT warned that timelines may shift due to weather or other factors and urged motorists to check 511nj.org for real-time traffic and construction updates.
