Impaired driving checkpoint, enforcement campaign planned at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area over Labor Day weekend

DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA — The National Park Service will conduct an impaired driving checkpoint and high-visibility enforcement campaign at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area over Labor Day weekend.

Beginning Friday, Sept. 4, and continuing throughout the holiday weekend, the National Park Service will participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

During the enforcement effort, U.S. park rangers will look for signs of alcohol and drug impairment. Rangers will also check for valid driver’s licenses and essential safety equipment.

“Our first priority is to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to plan ahead and determine a designated driver if they know they’ll be out drinking,” said Chief Ranger Eric Linaris. “The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an awareness effort to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal, and it takes lives.”

Officials are reminding visitors that impairment can affect a person’s judgment and are urging those who plan to drink to arrange for a safe ride home in advance and designate a sober driver.
