JCP&L offers cash incentives for recycling old appliances to save energy and reduce waste

NEW JERSEY — Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is encouraging customers to recycle older, inefficient appliances through its Appliance Recycling Program, offering incentives while helping residents save energy and protect the environment.

Customers can earn $100 for recycling a working refrigerator or freezer, plus up to $50 more when a room air conditioner or dehumidifier is recycled at the same time. In 2024, JCP&L customers recycled 5,480 appliances through the program, including 3,854 refrigerators.

Proper recycling helps reduce electricity use and landfill waste. ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, for example, use advanced technology to deliver savings — with certified freezers 10% more efficient than standard models and refrigerators about 9% more efficient.

“We’re excited to help customers save money and energy while benefiting the environment,” JCP&L officials said in a statement.

To qualify, customers must own the appliances, which must be operational at the time of pickup. Refrigerators and freezers should be 10 to 30 cubic feet in size. JCP&L limits participation to two refrigerators or freezers and up to three air conditioners or dehumidifiers per calendar year.

Pickups can be scheduled online or by calling 1-888-314-8141. Appliances are recycled following Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.
