Kean announces launch of 2025 Congressional App Challenge for student coders

LEBANON BOROUGH, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. on Thursday announced the opening of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge, a nationwide competition inviting middle and high school students to showcase their talents in coding and software development.

Designed to foster creativity and bolster interest in STEM education, the competition encourages students to build original apps using any programming language or platform—from mobile and web applications to robots and PC-based software.

“The Congressional App Challenge is an incredible opportunity for the next generation of innovators to showcase their creativity and technical talent,” said Kean. “Every year, I am inspired by the students of our district, and I look forward to seeing the innovative and impactful apps they create this year. Their work has the potential to give back to our communities, solve real-world problems, and inspire even more young people across New Jersey to pursue careers in STEM.”

Students from New Jersey’s 7th District can register and submit their apps through October 30, 2025, at 12 p.m. ET. Participants may compete individually or in teams of up to four students. All eligible students are encouraged to enter, regardless of prior experience with coding.

The winning app will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol and featured on the official House of Representatives website. Winners will also be invited to the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington, D.C., with runners-up also receiving local recognition.
