Lantern light tours return to Waterloo Village with ‘Shadows of the Past’

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County)Waterloo Village Historic Site will once again come alive by candlelight this October as the “Shadows of the Past Lantern Light Tours” return for three evenings of history, legend, and a touch of the paranormal.

The tours, set for Oct. 8, 22 and 29, invite guests to take a mile-and-a-half walk along the remnants of the Morris Canal and the streetscape of the historic village. Visitors will hear untold stories and local legends of canal laborers, grieving families and long-forgotten residents, while exploring eighteenth-century buildings, gathering around a fire and walking through shadowed areas by lantern light. Organizers say some guests may even encounter paranormal activity.

Each evening will feature three 90-minute tours beginning at 6:45 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person, and reservations are required by emailing villagewaterloo@gmail.com. Payment must be received one week prior to the scheduled tour to confirm a reservation.

Tours are limited to 20 participants per time slot and are open to ages 16 and older. Pets are not allowed. The tours will be held rain or shine, with weather updates posted on Waterloo Village’s social media platforms.
