Man arrested, facing charges for firing gun in Warren County

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – A Warren County man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly fired a handgun in Phillipsburg, according to the Warren County prosecutor’s Office.

On Thursday, May 23, at around 8:35 p.m., police responded to the area of Stockton and Mercer Streets after receiving a report of gunfire, authorities said.

Upon arrival, officers were· informed that no one had been shot but that an individual had discharged a gun, officials said.

During the course of the investigation, Khalil S. Thomas, 30, of Phillipsburg was identified as a suspect, and shortly thereafter arrested, the prosecutor’s office said.

Thomas was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, without first obtaining a permit, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, second-degree commit aggravated assault by attempting to cause bodily injury to a person with a deadly weapon, third-degree terroristic threats, threatened to kill another person, and refused to allow law enforcement to obtain fingerprints during the criminal arrest process. He is currently being held in the Warren County Correctional Center, officials said.

The second-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in the New Jersey State Prison and third-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of 5 years in the New Jersey State Prison. Disorderly persons offenses carry a maximum sentence of 6 months in the Warren County Correctional Center.

The Warren County Prosecutor’s Office and Pohatcong Township Police Department assisted the Phillipsburg Police Department with the investigation.
