Man charged after handgun, drugs found during Morris County traffic stop

FLORHAM PARK BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — A Newark man was charged with weapons and drug offenses after police said they found a loaded handgun, a high-capacity magazine and drugs during a traffic stop in Florham Park.

Police said an officer stopped a vehicle on Columbia Turnpike at about 2:40 p.m. May 28 after observing illegally tinted windows.

The driver, identified as Jamar London, 37, of Newark, was found to be driving with a suspended license and had an outstanding traffic warrant from Florham Park Municipal Court, according to police.

While London was being arrested on the warrant, police said the officer found a quantity of amphetamine. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine, authorities said.

Police said London was not legally permitted to carry or possess the firearm.

London was taken to police headquarters and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine. He also was issued several motor vehicle summonses, including driving while suspended, obstruction of windshield for vision, possession of an open container of alcohol or unsealed cannabis in a motor vehicle, and operation of a motor vehicle while in possession of a narcotic.

London was lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing before a Superior Court judge.
