Man charged with armed robbery in Somerset County, prosecutor says

BOUND BROOK BOROUGH, N.J. (Somerset County) — A 40-year-old Bound Brook man has been arrested and charged in connection with an armed robbery in which a woman reported a gunman tried to get into her car after she withdrew money from an ATM, authorities said.

Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald said Steven P. Loureiro was arrested following an investigation by the Bound Brook Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit. Loureiro was charged Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025, with first-degree armed robbery and second-degree eluding, authorities said.

Police were called about 1:05 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, to the area of West Union Avenue after a 911 report of an “unknown problem,” McDonald said. Officers spoke with a female victim who said she had returned to her vehicle after withdrawing money from an ATM when a man approached, armed with a black handgun, and tried to gain entry to her vehicle, authorities said.

The victim told police the man banged on her window and pointed the gun at her. She said she feared for her life and ran from the vehicle, authorities said. The man then got into her vehicle and stole about $800 in cash, along with the victim’s wallet and personal identification, McDonald said.

The victim described the suspect as wearing a hooded sweatshirt, black pants with white stripes and a bandana covering his face, authorities said. Investigators later determined the suspect was driving a Subaru wagon with tinted windows and a missing hubcap, McDonald said.

On Wednesday, Dec. 31, detectives observed a vehicle matching that description in Bound Brook, authorities said. A patrol officer attempted a directed motor vehicle stop, but the driver fled, driving erratically toward Route 287, according to the prosecutor. Police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons, authorities said.

Detectives later located the Subaru in a parking lot in Piscataway and took Loureiro into custody without incident, McDonald said. Authorities said a Superior Court search warrant was executed at Loureiro’s Bound Brook home, where investigators seized clothing matching the description of what the suspect wore during the robbery and an imitation firearm.

Loureiro was lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, authorities said.
