
Man charged with assault by auto, DWI in crash with cyclist in Hunterdon County
READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A man is facing several charges, including assault by auto and DWI, following a crash involving a cyclist in Hunterdon County.
The crash occurred on February 11 on Route 22 near Green Gate Road in Readington Township, according to police.
When officers arrived, they found the cyclist, a 55-year-old man from Milford Borough, disoriented and suffering from significant injuries. The vehicle that struck him continued westbound before pulling off the highway. The driver, John Van-Lenten, 60, of Lebanon, approached officers on the scene, police said.
The Whitehouse Rescue Squad transported the cyclist to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries, police said.
Investigating officers detected the odor of alcohol and subsequently arrested Van-Lenten for driving while intoxicated after he failed sobriety tests, police said.
Van-Lenten was charged with DWI, fourth-degree assault by auto, reckless driving, careless driving, unsafe lane change, failure to report an accident, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Van-Lenten was later released pending a court appearance, police said.
