Man charged with DUI, drug possession after welfare check in Mendham Township
MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A Totowa man was arrested on DUI and drug-related charges following a welfare check conducted by Mendham Township police earlier this month, authorities said.
Police said officers responded Dec. 12 to a report of a parked vehicle on Mendham Road near Sunrise Lake. When officers made contact with the driver, a 57-year-old man from Totowa, they observed signs of impairment consistent with illicit narcotic use.
A DUI investigation was conducted, and the driver was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence, police said.
A search of the vehicle resulted in additional charges, including possession of heroin, possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. The man was also charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.
After being processed, the man, whose name was not released, was lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility, authorities said.
With the holiday season approaching, police reminded motorists to designate a sober driver and plan ahead. Officials noted the arrest was the department’s fifth DUI arrest this month.
