Man sentenced in fatal pedestrian crash in Morris County

CHATHAM BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — A Chatham Township man has been sentenced in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred in Chatham Borough earlier this year, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll announced.

Matthew Vining, 29, was sentenced June 18 by Superior Court Judge Stephen J. Taylor to three years of probation after pleading guilty to reckless vehicular homicide, a third-degree crime.

As part of the sentence, Vining must serve 364 days in the Morris County Correctional Facility, complete 80 hours of community service and undergo a six-month driver’s license suspension that will begin upon his release from jail.

Vining entered his guilty plea on May 4 to one count of reckless vehicular homicide and a traffic offense for failure to maintain a lane.

The charges stem from a crash that occurred at approximately 12:07 p.m. Jan. 2 on Fairmount Avenue in Chatham Borough.

According to authorities, an investigation determined that Vining was driving a Ford F-150 south in the shoulder of Fairmount Avenue when the vehicle struck a pedestrian.

The 54-year-old pedestrian was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

The investigation was conducted by the Chatham Borough Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
