Man sentenced to 25 years for 2021 fatal shooting in Morristown

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — A 32-year-old former Morristown resident has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for a 2021 homicide on Clyde Potts Drive, Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll announced Friday.

According to Carroll, Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Robert McNally and Morristown Police Chief Darnell Richardson, Tyrell Lansing was sentenced Nov. 14 by Judge Stephen J. Taylor, P.J.Cr. Lansing must serve 85 percent of the sentence under the No Early Release Act.

Lansing previously pleaded guilty on Oct. 6, 2025, to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The charges stem from the Aug. 18, 2021 fatal shooting of 35-year-old Raijah Scott of Cedar Knolls.

Authorities said Morristown police received a 911 call around 1:03 a.m. reporting a shooting on Clyde Potts Drive. Responding officers found Scott in a parking lot near 28 Clyde Potts Drive with multiple gunshot wounds. The Morris County Medical Examiner later ruled the death a homicide.

Investigators determined that Lansing shot Scott multiple times before fleeing in a vehicle. Lansing was arrested the next day after being located in Oklahoma while traveling with co-defendant De’Quan McDaniel. He was extradited to New Jersey and held in custody throughout the case.

McDaniel, 31, pleaded guilty on Oct. 3, 2025, to third-degree hindering the apprehension or prosecution of Lansing. Judge Taylor sentenced him on Nov. 14 to a three-year suspended sentence and 250 hours of community service. A third defendant, 28-year-old Myles Dacres, pleaded guilty in 2022 to third-degree hindering and was sentenced to three years in state prison.

Authorities said McDaniel drove Lansing out of state to help him avoid arrest and Dacres provided false information to investigators during the probe.

Carroll praised the “collective efforts” of prosecutors, detectives and multiple agencies involved in the complex case, which required extensive pretrial motions and appeals. He recognized contributions from the Morristown Bureau of Police, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, New Jersey State Police, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes and Digital Forensics units.
