Man with toy gun prompts lockdown at hospital, elementary school in Hackettstown

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – Police say a report of a man with an AK-47 Friday afternoon led to the lockdown of Hackettstown Medical Center and Willow Grove Elementary School, before officers determined it was a toy gun.

On April 4, at around 2:20 p.m., police responded to the 600 block of Willow Grove Street for a report of a person with an AK-47 walking around the yard. It was reported that the person pointed the gun in the direction of Hackettstown Medical Center, authorities said.

Officers arrived on the scene and secured the area. Willow Grove Elementary School and Hackettstown Medical Center were placed on lockdown, which has since been lifted, police said.

Police later determined that the gun displayed was a toy gun without an orange tip. William Meza, 32, of Hackettstown, was charged with disorderly conduct, a disorderly persons offense, and released pending a court appearance, authorities said.

Assisting at the scene were the Hackettstown Department of Public Works, Mansfield Township Police Department, Independence Township Police Department, and Washington Township Police Department (Morris County).
