Mendham Township police urges residents to guard against rising property fraud
MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Police are warning residents to stay alert amid a rise in property and mortgage fraud targeting small towns, including cases reported in Mendham Township.
According to the police, scammers are increasingly impersonating landowners in an effort to fraudulently sell vacant lots to unsuspecting real estate agents and buyers. In many cases, victims are unaware that their property — and even their identity — has been stolen until it is too late.
To help residents protect themselves, the Morris County Clerk’s Office offers a free Property Alert Service, which notifies individuals via email whenever a document with their name is recorded. Officials say the alert system is an early warning tool that allows property owners to detect and report suspicious activity promptly.
Residents are also urged to remain vigilant and proactive about their land ownership. Anyone who suspects fraudulent activity is encouraged to alert local law enforcement and seek legal assistance.
