Morris County collects 208 pounds of unused medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — Morris County residents turned in 208 pounds of unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications during the second National Prescription Drug Take Back Day of 2026, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
The collection effort resulted in 15 boxes of surrendered medications gathered at three designated locations across the county, where law enforcement officials accepted prescription drugs for proper disposal.
The results were announced by Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Chief of Detectives Mark Castellano, Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon and police chiefs from Morris Plains, Morris Township, Randolph Township and Hanover Township.
The largest collection took place at Stop & Shop in Morris Plains, where residents surrendered 145 pounds of medications. Another 33 pounds were collected at ACME in Randolph, while ShopRite of Greater Morristown in Cedar Knolls collected 30 pounds.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a semiannual initiative coordinated by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Administration. The program brings together federal, state, county and municipal law enforcement agencies to provide residents with opportunities to anonymously dispose of medications they no longer need.
The initiative is intended to encourage the safe disposal of unused, unwanted and expired prescription drugs rather than leaving them stored in homes or disposing of them improperly.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, medications surrendered during the event were weighed and properly disposed of by law enforcement officials.
The latest collection brings the combined total from the spring and fall 2026 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events at Morris County’s law enforcement-staffed collection locations to 481 pounds.
The Prosecutor’s Office said the program continues to provide residents with a convenient way to remove unwanted prescription medications from their homes while supporting safe disposal efforts throughout Morris County.
