Morris County expands harm reduction efforts with new vending machines and Narcan access
MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Morris County Government, which includes the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Morris County Commissioners, is expanding harm reduction efforts with the assistance of Prevention is Key (PIK) in Rockaway. These efforts aim to prolong and save lives through harm reduction strategies.
As part of the Morris County Treatment Access Plan, the Morris County Department of Human Services prioritizes the use of harm reduction strategies. These strategies include, but are not limited to, access to harm reduction services, Narcan, and education. Harm reduction strategies aim to reduce the spread of communicable diseases, prevent overdoses and fatalities, and decrease associated stigma. PIK provides these services and is funded by the Morris County Department of Human Services under Chapter 51 and through opioid settlement funding.
Three Harm Reduction Vending Machines have been installed by PIK at locations throughout Morris County, including the Morris County Correctional Facility. It is recognized that individuals released from incarceration are at a higher risk for overdose and fatalities. The easily accessible vending machine in the lobby of the correctional facility distributes Narcan to those in need.
The installation of these harm reduction vending machines complements innovative community programs, including Hope Wing, Hope One, Hope Hub, and Community Connections, which assist individuals and families struggling with substance use and mental health disorders.
Sheriff James M. Gannon, Prosecutor Robert Carroll, and PIK are proud to announce that the 200th lifesaving Narcan kit has been distributed at the Morris County Correctional Facility. The much-needed Narcan is not only being accessed by individuals leaving the facility, but also by concerned family members and friends.
PIK’s Rockaway location has been recognized by the New Jersey Department of Health as a registered Harm Reduction Center since December 2023. Morris County government anticipates continued success through this effort and other community outreach programs.
