Morris County man dies in single-vehicle rollover crash in Branchburg Township

BRANCHBURG TOWNSHIP, NJ (Somerset County) – A 35-year-old man from Morris County is dead after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday night in Somerset County, according to Chief Richard Buck.

The crash occurred on February 18, at approximately 10:08 p.m., on Route 202 at Whiton Road, Buck said.

Upon arrival, police found a 2024 blue Mercedes coupe overturned at the intersection of Whiton Road and Route 202. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 35-year-old male from Whippany, was located lying on the ground next to the overturned car, Buck said.

Branchburg police officers immediately rendered medical aid to the individual until Branchburg Rescue and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset EMS arrived on the scene to assist, Buck said.

The driver was transported by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, where he was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash, Buck said.

The driver’s name is being withheld at this time out of respect for the privacy of his family and loved ones, Buck said.

Initial on-scene investigation determined that the Mercedes was traveling northbound on Route 202 when it entered the grass median, struck a drainage basin, and was projected into a roll. The vehicle eventually collided with a traffic light at the intersection of Route 202 and Whiton Road, Buck said.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing by Branchburg Police Department Detectives, Buck added.

Due to the severity of the crash, which involved a downed traffic light at Route 202 and Whiton Road, the highway was closed in both directions at the intersection. The NJ State DOT Diversion later arrived to set up necessary detours until the scene could be cleared.
