Morris County traffic stop leads to arrest of suspect wanted for aggravated assault in connection with a shooting

BOONTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A man wanted for aggravated assault in connection with a  shooting in East Orange was arrested following a traffic stop in Boonton Township earlier this month, according to police.

On Feb. 16, officers were monitoring traffic on Powerville Road when a vehicle with dark tinted windows was observed. A plate inquiry further turned up a suspended registration and license for the registered owner, police said.

Officers stopped the vehicle and made contact with Bernard F James, 29, of East Orange and while interacting with James, it was revealed he had an active warrant for aggravated assault related to a shooting in East Orange, police said.

James was arrested and his car was impounded pending a search warrant by East Orange detectives, police said.

James was issued summons for driving while suspended, suspended registration, and no liability insurance before being turned over to East Orange Violent Crimes Task Force, police said.
