Morris County man killed in NY motorcycle crash

CARMEL, NY (Putnam County) – A Morris County man was killed in a motorcycle crash last month in New York state.

The crash happened on May 31, at around 2:10 p.m., on Route 301 west of Gypsy Trail Road in Carmel, according to Putnam County Sheriff Kevin J. McConville.

A preliminary police investigation determined that a motorcycle, operated by Peter Leist, 62, of Denville Township, was traveling westbound on Route 301 and had passed several vehicles by crossing over the double yellow lines when it struck head-on a small bus, driven by Lauren Hoffman, 23, of Carmel, that was traveling in the opposite direction, McConville said.

Leist was pronounced dead at the scene, McConville said.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while an investigation was conducted with Sheriff’s personnel and members of the New York State Police Troop K Collision Reconstruction Unit, McConville said.
