Morris County officer falls through icy pond while rescuing dog that fell through; another officer saves both

CHESTER, NJ (Morris County) – A Chester police officer fell through the ice while rescuing a dog that had fallen into a pond, but another officer quickly saved both the dog and the officer, according to police.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ptl. Capone and Sgt. Notte responded to a 9-1-1 call about a Husky named “Ghost” who had fallen through the ice and was in distress at a pond on Old Chester Road in Chester. Risking personal injury, Ptl. Capone and Sgt. Notte, using a department-issued snare, crawled out onto the ice in an attempt to save the dog, police said.

At one point, the ice gave way, causing Ptl. Capone to fall into the freezing water. Sgt. Notte then successfully pulled both Ptl. Capone and “Ghost” from the water, likely saving the dog’s life, police said.

Sgt. Henry and Ptl. Durkin arrived on scene and began rendering aid to Ptl. Capone. The officer was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital by Atlantic BLS as a precaution due to exposure to frigid temperatures. He was evaluated and discharged shortly afterward without any issues, police said.

“We are extremely proud of our officers’ swift actions and thankful that everyone, including ‘Ghost,’ is safe and sound at home with their loved ones,” police said.
