Morris County sheriff promotes John Eckert to detective sergeant
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon presided over a promotion ceremony Friday, elevating John Eckert to the rank of detective sergeant during an event at the Historic Courtroom in the Morris County Superior Courthouse.
Eckert, who holds a degree in criminal justice from Guilford Technical Community College, began his law enforcement career after graduating from the Morris County Police Academy, Class No. 70. He was hired by the Morris County Park Police in June 2008.
Over the years, Eckert has served in multiple roles within the department, including assignments in the Detective Bureau, Mounted Unit and Child ID Unit. He has also worked as the department’s Humane Law Enforcement Officer and Terminal Agency Coordinator, gaining experience in both investigative and administrative functions.
His career has included involvement in community outreach programs such as the Junior Police Academy and the Detective Sergeant Tim Abline Memorial Toy Drive. In 2017, he received the Attorney General’s Award for Outstanding Community Policing.
Eckert has also served as an instructor at the Morris County Public Safety Academy, teaching RADAR instruction and property and evidence management courses.
In his current role, Eckert oversees the department’s property and evidence operations, managing more than 35,000 items and ensuring compliance with strict evidentiary standards. He also assists with the Prescription Drug Drop Box Program, which has resulted in the collection and safe disposal of more than 78,000 pounds of medications.
In 2024, he became a member of the International Association for Property and Evidence.
Officials congratulated Eckert on his promotion and recognized his years of service and contributions to law enforcement in Morris County.
