MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Morris County Surrogate Heather J. Darling spoke at Mount Olive Township’s 25th anniversary Sept. 11 memorial ceremony Friday evening, reflecting on the attacks and the importance of teaching younger generations about that day.
Darling is the current Morris County surrogate, a position she has held since 2020, according to Morris County.
During the ceremony, speakers recalled the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the unity and national pride that followed the attacks, the words “we will never forget” and the need to teach those who are too young to remember.
Darling spoke about where she was that day and recalled the horror witnessed by many on television and heard on the radio as first responders were at the scene.
“No American who was close enough to the families, the events, or this area, will ever forget. But now, we have an entire generation almost none of whom remember,” said Darling.
Retired New York Fire Department Lt. Jim LoFaso delivered the keynote address, speaking about the aftermath of the attacks and the lasting effects that continue to impact thousands of people.
The ceremony included opening prayers by a firefighter and an EMT.
Mount Olive Mayor Joe Nicastro, Morris County Commissioner John Krickus, former Mayor Paul Licitra, former Councilman Ray Perkins and Council President Alex Roman also spoke during the ceremony.
