Mount Olive begins hydrant flushing program; temporary discoloration possible
MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A routine hydrant flushing program is underway in Mount Olive Township as officials work to maintain water quality across the system, according to the township water department.
The program began the week of April 20 and is expected to continue for about two weeks, with completion anticipated by April 27.
Hydrant flushing involves opening fire hydrants and forcing water through distribution mains to remove rust and sediment buildup. While officials say the sediment does not pose a health risk, it can cause temporary discoloration in tap water during periods of flushing.
Township officials said the work is part of ongoing efforts to ensure drinking water meets all federal and state standards.
The Mount Olive Water Department conducts hydrant flushing two to three times per year, typically during periods of lower water demand. The program also includes testing and maintaining fire hydrants.
Officials said water service will not be interrupted during the process, though residents may notice brief periods of discolored water in affected areas. They recommend running taps until the water clears and avoiding laundry or dishwashing until normal color returns.
