Mount Olive police stop 153 vehicles, issue 31 summonses during Goal Zero campaign

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Mount Olive Township Police Department participated in the statewide Goal Zero traffic-safety initiative during enforcement details held Nov. 26 and Dec. 23, officials said.

Goal Zero is organized by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and promotes a shared commitment to eliminating traffic-related deaths, injuries and crashes on New Jersey roadways.

Chief Michael Spitzer said the department’s participation reflects its focus on roadway safety, particularly during the busy holiday travel season.

“No family should have to experience the tragic consequences of a preventable traffic crash,” Spitzer said. “By participating in Goal Zero, we’re committing to action — not just words — to reduce risks on our roads this holiday season.”

Police said Mount Olive experienced increased traffic volume during the holidays. By taking part in the initiative, the department aimed to reinforce the message that roadway safety is a shared responsibility and that prevention efforts are most effective when drivers, pedestrians and law enforcement work together.

Mount Olive officers worked two Goal Zero enforcement shifts totaling 10 hours. During that time, officers stopped 153 vehicles and issued 31 summonses, including four for speeding, two for reckless driving and four for careless driving.

Officers also responded to 12 motor vehicle crashes during the initiative. Police said one crash occurred shortly after the enforcement period ended and involved an intoxicated driver, resulting in injuries to two juveniles.

Officials said the enforcement results and number of crashes underscore the continued need for safe driving practices. The Mount Olive Township Police Department said it will continue working with the community to make roadway safety a top priority.
