Mount Olive police warn public of ice safety on Budd Lake

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – The Mount Olive Police Department is issuing a safety reminder to both residents and visitors: the ice on Budd Lake is never guaranteed to be 100% safe, even as the winter months progress. As temperatures fluctuate and winter conditions change, it’s crucial to understand the risks of venturing onto the lake’s ice without proper knowledge of its condition.

Budd Lake, a natural body of water that serves as the headwaters for the South Branch of the Raritan River, requires consistent below-freezing temperatures over an extended period for its surface to freeze. However, unpredictable weather patterns and shifting ice conditions make it impossible for authorities to provide an endorsement on the safety of the ice.

“The ice can change from hour to hour, and due to the nature of the lake and weather conditions this winter, we cannot guarantee the ice is safe for any activities,” said a Mount Olive Police representative.

The department urges anyone considering winter activities on the lake to take extreme caution. Ice thickness can vary greatly, and without proper testing, walking or skating on the lake can be dangerous. The risk of falling through the ice, especially in freezing temperatures, can lead to rapid hypothermia, which diminishes coordination and strength as the body attempts to preserve heat in vital organs.

To help mitigate these risks, the police recommend that those engaging in any ice activities wear proper flotation devices, such as life jackets, float coats, or flotation suits, which can offer crucial protection if the ice gives way.

The Mount Olive Police also stress the importance of knowing how to properly test the ice before venturing onto it. For those unsure, they strongly advise against stepping onto the ice until further research is done regarding safety practices.

“Please avoid a tragedy,” the department cautioned. “Remember, Budd Lake is never 100% frozen, and safety should always be your top priority.”

As winter continues, the Mount Olive Police encourage everyone to stay informed, stay cautious, and keep safety at the forefront of any outdoor activities.
