CHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Construction is expected to begin in the coming months on about 27 single-family homes on a property in the southern end of Chester Township, according to Mayor Tim Drag.
In a Facebook post, Drag said the homes will be built on the former Cantor property, a large open area along Route 206 near Hall Road, just south of Desiderio’s.
The homes are expected to range from about 3,500 to 5,500 square feet, Drag said.
Although construction is only now expected to move forward, the development itself is more than two decades old. Drag said the project was originally approved in 2002 or 2003 but was never completed.
The original approval was granted before the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act and remains valid, according to the mayor.
Drag said excavation work is expected to begin before the fall, with foundations anticipated to be installed before the ground freezes.
The project will bring a noticeable change to property that has remained largely undeveloped for years, Drag said.
“This will be a significant change to a property that has sat largely undeveloped for many years, so I wanted to give residents a heads-up before you start seeing equipment and construction activity,” Drag wrote.
The mayor said he plans to provide residents with additional updates as construction progresses.
