
New Jersey ranks sixth nationwide for number of credit cards, WalletHub report finds
NEW JERSEY – New Jersey ranks sixth in the nation for the number of credit cards held by residents, according to a new report released this week by personal-finance website WalletHub as the holiday spending season approaches.
The WalletHub analysis, States With the Most Credit Cards, highlights trends in credit card ownership and new account openings — data that can signal where consumers may be more vulnerable to overspending or missing payments.
In the third quarter of 2025, New Jersey residents opened an average of 1.29 new credit cards, the report found. Overall, individuals in the state owned an average of 6.20 credit cards during the same period.
Those figures represent increases from the third quarter of 2024, with the average number of new credit cards opened rising by 5.44% and the average total number of cards owned increasing by 2.25%.
