NJ Transit offers free rides for children, holiday discounts and expanded service through Jan. 5
NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit is offering expanded service, free rides for children and special fare promotions during the holiday season to accommodate increased travel for family gatherings, special events and celebrations.
Through 2 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, NJ Transit’s SuperSaver fare allows up to two children age 11 and under to ride free with each fare-paying adult. The promotion applies across the system and is intended to encourage families to use public transportation during the busy holiday period.
NJ Transit is also offering seasonal discounts and promotional deals through its mobile app. Both new and existing customers can take advantage of Buy One, Get One Free offers and discounted travel to destinations including Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Details on available promotions can be found at njtransit.com/holiday.
In addition to fare incentives, NJ Transit has adjusted schedules and added service around Christmas and New Year’s to manage holiday demand.
On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, early getaway rail service will operate from Penn Station New York, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal, while most rail lines will run on weekday or special holiday schedules. Bus and light rail services will largely operate on regular weekday schedules.
On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, rail service will run on a weekend or major holiday schedule, with Port Jervis Line Train 88 operating. Most bus routes will operate on Sunday schedules or modified Sunday schedules, and Newark Light Rail, the River LINE and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on Sunday or holiday schedules.
Modified weekday rail service is planned for Dec. 26, 29, 30 and 31, as well as Jan. 2, with some morning peak-period trains canceled and additional late-morning service added on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines. NJ Transit officials encourage customers to check schedules in advance and travel outside peak hours when possible.
For New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, NJ Transit will operate modified weekday rail service with additional evening and overnight trains on most lines. After midnight, extra late-night rail service will be available on all lines except the Atlantic City Line, with Raritan Valley Line service operating overnight to and from New York. Regular weekend or holiday schedules will resume after 6:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
NJ Transit reminded customers that no beverages of any kind, open or closed, will be permitted on trains, buses or light rail vehicles from Dec. 31 through the early morning hours of Jan. 1. Increased police presence is expected throughout the system, and the ban on beverages on buses remains in effect at all times.
Customers are advised to plan trips in advance, allow extra travel time due to holiday traffic, travel light with luggage and purchase tickets ahead of time using the NJ Transit mobile app, ticket vending machines or ticket agents.
