NJ State Police announce passing of Mount King, a ‘dedicated’ member of Mounted Unit

NEW JERSEY – The New Jersey State Police announced the passing of a horse from the Mounted Unit on Tuesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the untimely passing of NJSP Mount King on Tuesday, January 21, 2025,” state police said.

A dedicated member of the NJSP Mounted Unit, King was an almost 19hh Percheron who joined the unit in November 2023 from the Lancaster Police Department, where he was also a phenomenal partner.

Though King’s tenure with the NJSP was short, he will be remembered as an inspiring and dedicated member of the unit. King assisted in multiple missing person searches, conducted numerous target-hardening deployments throughout New Jersey, and provided security at large-scale events.

Most of all, King’s shining moments came when he was able to interact with the public, whether through demonstrations at schools or organized community events.

King’s contributions to public safety and his bond with all Mounted Unit members will be cherished. He will forever be honored as a loyal partner, a dedicated public servant, and a distinguished member of our law enforcement family.
