NJ Transit offers interactive safety programs for students from kindergarten through high school
NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit is offering a series of interactive safety education programs for students from kindergarten through high school during the 2026-27 school year.
The programs focus on rail, school bus and pedestrian safety through age-appropriate activities for students of all abilities. Programs are now being booked for fall 2026 and spring 2027.
The programs include:
- Special SEAT (Safety Education Awareness Training): Uses crafts, visual aids and real-world role-playing to teach students about the dangers of trespassing, obeying signs and signals and staying behind the yellow line on train platforms.
- Protecting Our Pedestrians: A 45-minute interactive presentation teaching students how to safely cross streets, recognize traffic hazards and remain alert around transit systems. The program includes NJ Transit’s “Sly Fox and Birdie” safety video.
- Safety Town: A mobile, miniature city featuring traffic lights, sidewalks, crosswalks and tracks where children can practice making safe decisions while biking, walking or commuting.
- Safety Rules!: Provides transit safety lessons for students in grades K-12 through hands-on learning, age-appropriate media and group discussions covering travel by bus, light rail and train.
NJ Transit’s Safety Education Program team also provides presentations and resources for adults, libraries and community groups, including PTA meetings and senior centers.
New for the 2026-27 academic year, NJ Transit is establishing permanent safety partnerships with schools located near railroad tracks to provide year-round safety education.
Participating schools will receive two guaranteed presentations each school year, one in the fall and another in the spring. NJ Transit Safety Education specialists will provide customized programming covering school bus, rail and light rail safety.
The partnerships will also include “Safety Week” collaborations featuring assemblies, activities and other safety education.
