One dead, two injured in New Year’s Day single-vehicle crash on Route 23 in Sussex County
WANTAGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — One person was killed and two others were injured in a single-vehicle crash late Thursday morning on Route 23 in Wantage Township, according to New Jersey State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at 11:58 a.m. on Route 23 south at milepost 49.2, state police spokesman Trooper II Christopher Postorino said.
A preliminary investigation determined that Nazar Bilous, 21, of Brooklyn, New York, was driving an Audi SUV with two passengers when the vehicle ran off the roadway while negotiating a curve. Police said the Audi struck a large rock, re-entered the roadway, then ran off the road again and struck a large tree stump and a tree.
Bilous sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, authorities said.
A rear-seat passenger, identified as Volodymyr-Zakhar Sheremeta, 21, also of Brooklyn, sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. A third occupant, seated in the front passenger seat, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to an area hospital.
The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information was available.
