Overnight lane closures to continue next week on I-280 bridge over Passaic River

EAST HANOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Overnight single-lane closures in both directions on Interstate 280 are scheduled to continue next week as part of ongoing work on the bridge over the Passaic River, located between East Hanover Township in Morris County and Roseland in Essex County, state transportation officials announced.

Starting at 10 p.m. Monday, July 21, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, and continuing each night through Thursday, July 24, one lane on I-280 eastbound and westbound will be closed before the bridge. One lane in each direction will remain open overnight.

The closures are part of a larger $12 million federally funded infrastructure project to replace the I-280 eastbound bridge deck. The work also includes improvements to bridge abutments, guiderail replacement, installation of a wildlife fence, and scour protection enhancements to the piers beneath the bridge.

The multi-year project is being completed in stages to reduce traffic disruptions. Final completion is anticipated by fall 2029, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and expect delays in the area. NJDOT will issue advance notice before implementing any future traffic shifts.

Schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. For up-to-date traffic and construction alerts, motorists can visit www.511nj.org.
