Man arrested for theft by deception in Mount Olive car scam

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) — A Maryland man has been charged in connection with a fraudulent vehicle sale that cost a victim more than $9,000, police said.

On Aug. 16, 2024, a victim reported to police headquarters that he had agreed to purchase a vehicle for $24,375 on July 11, 2024. He wired an initial payment of $9,875 to an account provided by the seller but never received the vehicle. After receiving the funds, the seller allegedly stopped communicating.

The case was referred to the Mt. Olive Police Investigations Division, where detectives identified the seller as Terryl L. Ray, 43, of Suitland, Maryland. The transaction was determined to be fraudulent.

A warrant was issued for Ray’s arrest on Feb. 13, 2025. On May 13, 2025, Ray turned himself in at police headquarters and was arrested without incident.

He was charged with theft by deception and lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance.
