Overnight lane closures underway on Route 23 northbound in Morris County for paving project

MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — Overnight lane closures on Route 23 northbound are now underway as part of a roadway resurfacing and improvement project stretching through parts of Pompton Plains and Riverdale, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced.

The first overnight closure began Friday, June 6, at 8 p.m. and continued until 6 a.m. Saturday, June 7. The work will continue Monday through Friday nights over the next two weeks, with lane closures scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. At least one northbound lane will remain open during construction.

The closures are part of the $13.8 million Route 23, Alexander Avenue to Maple Lake Road Resurfacing Project. The work includes resurfacing approximately three miles of Route 23 northbound from Alexander Avenue in Pequannock to I-287 in Riverdale. Additional improvements include traffic signal upgrades at 10 intersections, new pedestrian signal heads and push buttons, installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps, and guiderail upgrades in both directions to meet current standards.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Portable variable message signs are in place to alert drivers of upcoming traffic changes. NJDOT encourages motorists to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and construction updates.

The construction schedule is subject to change based on weather or other factors.
