Oxford Township offering limited number of bear-proof garbage cans through trial program
OXFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — Oxford Township is offering residents a limited number of bear-proof garbage cans as part of a pilot program aimed at reducing conflicts between bears and residents.
Township officials announced the initiative in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, noting that the local bear population is expected to become more active as animals emerge from winter hibernation.
Officials said unsecured trash cans are one of the most common food sources that attract bears into residential neighborhoods.
To help address the issue, the township has received 24 bear-proof garbage cans that will be distributed to selected residents participating in the trial program.
Residents who want to take part must complete an application, which can be picked up at the Oxford Township Clerk’s Office. Participants must also agree to answer follow-up questions from the DEP regarding the use and effectiveness of the cans.
Applicants will be asked to provide their name, address, email and phone number, according to the township notice.
After a two-week application period, township officials will review submissions and contact selected residents with instructions on when and where to pick up the bear-resistant containers.
